Upcoming Camps

This camp is for Masters’/Juniors’ rowers and other endurance athletes who want to take their performance to the next level. The very best athletes in any sport have great musculoskeletal body balance. Optimal balance gives an athlete the necessary foundation to achieve peak athletic performance. Many athletes however, both professional and recreational, have underlying imbalances that not only limit their peak performance, but also increase their risk of injury.

Coach Kaehler’s structural evaluation helps create an optimal training environment for your body. Each participant at the Kaehler Training Camp will receive his structural assessment.

Goals

The goals of the Kaehler Training Camp include identifying musculoskeletal imbalances, correcting the imbalances with specific strength training exercises, and applying the structural and biomechanical changes to improve your performance on the water.

As a participant at the camp, you will receive Kaehler’s structural evaluation and appropriate corrective exercises. These exercises will help restore your musculoskeletal body balance. You will also be assessed on the water and participate in a coached group strength training session.

The camp also includes a lecture that will help you understand how correcting identified imbalances will help you reduce the risk of injury, and improve your performance on the water. Combining the strength training sessions with the lecture series will help you immediately apply these new skills into your training at home.

We will conduct on-the-water sessions in singles, doubles or quads. Strength training sessions will be taught in small groups to focus on proper lifting technique, and will also address common corrective exercises and basic strength training biomechanics.

When and Where

We will offer one, two, and three day camps at Lake Luxembourg in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.  Also, additional camps will be forming in Seattle, Florida, and California during the winter. Dates are tentative. Please contact Coach Kaehler for more details.

By special arrangement, Coach Kaehler can also offer the same services at your club.  Coach Kaehler does provide your club or boathouse with a facility fee to host this camp.

Structural Evaluation

Musculoskeletal Evaluation - Lower Body

Musculoskeletal Evaluation - Lower Body

Refined over a 17 year period, Coach Kaehler’s structural evaluation helps determine the needs of both injured and non-injured athletes. His testing approach has been used effectively on hundreds of rowers, runners, and triathletes of varying ages and levels of experience, including recreational, high school and collegiate athletes, as well as national team members and Olympic champions.

Coach Kaehler’s structural evaluation carefully assesses your strength and flexibility in relation to your trunk, and upper and lower extremities. The evaluation helps identify your overall musculoskeletal body balance. Kaehler will also discuss and consider your previous musculoskeletal and injury history before he gives you appropriate corrective exercises.

Corrective Exercises

Corrective Exercise Instruction

Corrective Exercise Instruction

After the structural evaluation, Coach Kaehler will give you specific corrective exercises which he will review and demonstrate with you. As a participant, you will also receive an individualized PDF copy of your specific corrective exercises.  Each PDF file of   exercises includes clear photos and written text to assist with applying these corrective exercises to your training program.  Unlimited access to the Coach Kaehler video library will also assist with your corrective exercises.

Group Strength Training Sessions

During the camp, Coach Kaehler will lead strength training sessions in small groups of 10 participants or less. During these sessions, Kaehler will review proper basic lifting techniques, demonstrate the most common corrective exercises for rowing imbalances, and identify and correct individual issues relating to the exercises.

The emphasis of these training and corrective exercise sessions is to help you improve your body awareness, as it relates to correct lifting techniques, power application, and rowing technique.

Participants will use body weight, lifting sticks (dowels) and light dumbbells during these strength training sessions.

Strength Training and Injury Prevention Lecture

This informative and practical lecture will give participants an overview of the muscular system used in the rowing stroke, both on the drive and during the recovery. It will also include a basic overview of anatomy and biomechanics and explain how specific strength training will help you improve your performance.

Kaehler will also discuss common rowing injuries, and how imbalances limit a rower’s ability to reach peak performance, and increase their risk of injury. Participants will learn how to correct their own body imbalances with specific corrective exercises.

Ergometer or on-the-Water Evaluation

Checking Finish Position for Good Spine Alignment

Checking Finish Position for Good Spine Alignment

Coach Kaehler will evaluate each participant on the water and or ergometer after receiving their structural evaluation. This rowing evaluation helps to correlate how identified rowing technique and body position flaws are often directly correlated to the individual imbalances found in their structural evaluation.  Uncorrected imbalances can limit improvement of on the water/ergometer technique and power application.   As a participant, you will have the opportunity to integrate and apply your new body awareness both on the water/ergometer,  and in the group strength training sessions.

Armed with this new awareness, you will train more effectively, reduce your risk of injuries and enjoy more satisfying results on the water. You will become a better rower!
